What is Art Therapy

Societies have been communicating using visual art from as far back as there have been homo sapiens. The oldest known cave drawing is 73,000 years old. Just like music, art is integral to our connection with the World and Self.

In more recent times art has been pigeonholed as being relevant only by its aesthetic appeal. This notion of being good/ talented has become a huge obstacle for most people.

Art is a universal language. Imagery is used in spoken language as well as dreams. E.g “raining cats and dogs” “red with rage” “sweating buckets”. While our conscious brain uses words, our unconscious mind uses our 6 senses.

Art therapy is about taking back that power. The natural innate ability to express ourselves, learn about what makes us tick, facilitating the process of healing.

What to expect

There is no “one size fits all” as every client is treated according to their needs. After all everyone is a unique individual.

reEsteem takes the Transpersonal approach to art therapy.

A typical session lasts 60 minutes and will include a check in to discuss how you are feeling or concerns at that time. This may be followed by meditative guided visualisations, leading up to a suitable art process and debrief.

Some may only want to engage in art, others may prefer to talk or use Sandplay.

I work with children, adolescents and adults (including those with NDIS funding). Among people I’ve worked with who benefitted from art therapy have included those with high functioning autism, PTSD, physical disabilities, undergoing life transitions among other things.

Transpersonal psychology is a sub-field of psychology that integrates the spiritual and transcendental aspects of human experience within the framework of modern psychology.

Sandplay

As part of my therapy practice I include Sandplay therapy.

Sandplay makes use of a sandbox and miniature figurines to create a miniature world that reflects a person’s inner thoughts, struggles and concerns.

This is also a non-verbal therapy which works well in conjunction with art therapy and talk therapy, as well as a therapy on its own to help access the language of the sub conscious.

About Miriam

I am a qualified Transpersonal Art Therapist and Sandplay Therapist working in the industry for over 10 years. I really enjoy working one on one with adults and children with a wide range of concerns. I have also enjoyed working with groups.

I began drawing when I was a teenager to help make sense of my world, because I couldn’t find the right words to be able to express the way I was feeling. By reflecting on my own self growth, that came about by drawing and journalling, I became driven to pursue art therapy as a career; passionate to support others in gaining confidence, self esteem and to help them overcome other issues through self expression.

Alongside being an art therapist I’m also a mother to 2, wife, doggy mum and artist.
